How to settle yourself when in the midst of chaos
We have all been there. It’s Monday and we really are not ready for the work week to start. We end up getting late. We cannot find our car keys. Our cell phone is dying as we forgot to charge it last night. Just things that annoy and frustrate us. We could also have some serious issues such as a sick child or an emergency call from a relative.
There are many reasons why we can feel ourselves getting into a tailspin. Things seem out of our control and we do not know how to pull ourselves together. We feel disconnected and a bit lost. We have all been there sometimes and struggle to find our way back to ourselves.
I know I have been in that situation at different points in my life. I have felt disconnected from myself. It seemed that I felt apart from those around me also. One way for me to come back to myself is to get grounded.
The typical definition of grounding that one may be familiar with is the electrical definition of grounding which is “A connection between an electrical conductor and the Earth. Grounds are used to establish a common zero-voltage reference for electric devices in order to prevent potentially dangerous voltages from arising between them and other objects”.
When things get chaotic, we feel disconnected from ourselves and those around us. We can feel disconnected from the Earth even. We are thrown around by the winds of whatever is happening at the moment. One way to help still ourselves and our being is to get grounded and centered. We need to establish that connection to the Earth with our feet firmly planted. For me this helps me find my way back to myself.
Grounding is merely a way to connect one’s self to the Earth.
One way that works for me is to just stand or sit or lie down and breathe in and out deeply and slowly. I picture myself on the beach. I am barefoot at the water’s edge. The waves are gently coming in and running over my feet. I feel the tide washing over them, pulling me towards the water. My feet are sinking deeper into the sand as the water flows back out into the ocean.
I feel that I am sinking down into the earth. I am releasing the tension and stress I feel back into the Earth. I nestle myself down into the cool sand. I draw into myself the rhythm of the waves. I let go bit by bit of the stress I am feeling. I let it flow back out with the waves and into the ocean.
And little by little as I slowly breathe in and out that I am feeling lighter and less weighed down. The dark cloud that has been hanging over my head has cleared away and the sun is shining.
This is my gift to you to try for yourself.
What ways have you found to reconnect to yourself? What ways call you back and out of the vortex of chaos?

Yoga and aromatherapy help me with everyday stress. And working on being organized- always try to put my car keys in the same place.
