Fall is just the start…..
The leaves are already falling which means the cold weather and winter are not far behind. The chilly temperatures mean less humidity and drier air that also tend to dry out your skin more causing it to lose its natural oils and moisture. The winter winds that whip right through us can cause chapped skin and cracked lips~ ouch! Going inside to keep warm and get out of the cold can also mean more dryness from the indoor heating systems. So what can we do to protect our skin?
I know you have all heard this before but keeping yourself hydrated on the inside helps to keep you hydrated on the outside which helps prevent dry skin. And please this means drinking plain water or maybe with added lemon or lime juice but no additives and soda or coffee does not count. Your body needs to flush itself out with water. Okay I am now off my “soap box”.
I am the first one to vote for a hot bath to warm up a cold body but long hot baths in the winter can irritate dry skin by stripping away more of the skin’s natural oils. Best to keep to more warm than hot baths or showers and shorter times. The best thing afterwards when your skin’s pores open would be to slather on a good cream or thick lotion. Make sure you read the labels of the moisturizers you purchase to make sure they do not contain any alcohol as this would actually be drying to the skin. You want to seal in that moisture from that bath or shower so you skin is re-hydrated.
Make sure when you go outside that you start dressing appropriately ~ number one so you don’t get cold and number two so you protect your skin. If you are going to be out for a while, remember gloves as your hands have the least amount of natural oils and need a lot of protection. Make sure to protect your lips with lip balms so they don’t get chapped. If you are out in the weather allot make sure you wear sunblock as yes you can get windburn and you can still get sunburn from the sun’s UV rays.
